On September 11, 2024, Modesto Agriculture & Development Organization (MADO) successfully conducted a natural spring water source assessment in Hai Peace 2, Gudele 1, within Juba City Council, as part of its ongoing commitment to address urgent water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) needs in underserved communities.
The assessment was initiated following concerns raised by residents over the lack of access to safe, affordable, and reliable water sources in the area. MADO’s technical team inspected a local spring water point heavily relied upon by the community, despite its visibly poor sanitary conditions and contamination risks.
Residents expressed deep frustrations during community dialogues held at the site. Many households reported that they cannot afford trucked drinking water, which is priced beyond the reach of most low-income families. A resident, Mary*, explained, "We are forced to use the spring because buying a jerrican of clean water every day is impossible with no job and no support. Our children are getting sick, but we have no option."
The assessment found that while the spring offers year-round water flow, it is exposed to open defecation zones, animal waste, and lacks basic protection infrastructure. Residents use the water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and laundry, exposing families—especially women, children, and the elderly—to serious health risks such as diarrheal diseases, typhoid, and skin infections.
MADO’s WASH team will compile the findings into a technical report and share recommendations with the Juba City Council and relevant humanitarian partners. Proposed interventions include spring protection works, community hygiene education, and advocacy for equitable access to clean water for all urban poor residents.
"We are committed to working with communities and authorities to ensure no one is left behind in accessing basic services," said MADO’s WASH Program Coordinator. "Clean water is not a privilege — it is a right."
